National Black Business Month Spotlight: Uptown Dance Academy

National Black Business Month is a time to honor Black-owned businesses that are making a difference in our communities. This month, HEF is proud to highlight Uptown Dance Academy (“UDA”), an institution founded by Robin Williams in 1996. UDA has been introducing Harlem’s minority youth to professional dance and theater, offering training and performance opportunities.

The Leader of Uptown Dance Academy

Robin Williams, an accomplished choreographer, and dance educator has led Uptown Dance Academy to provide minority youth with dance education that equips them for successful careers in the performing arts. With a history of performances, including roles with the Dance Theatre of Harlem and Ballet Long Island, Williams created a curriculum that improves technique while fostering cultural awareness, self-discipline, and personal growth in every student.

Excellence in Dance Education

UDA’s curriculum spans a variety of dance styles, from ballet and tap to modern, jazz, acrobatics, hip hop, and African dance. Designed for students aged 3-19, this education prepares young dancers for the challenges of the professional stage. What stands out about UDA is its emphasis on bridging the gap between classroom training and real-world experience. The academy’s students participate in over 40 performances each year, gaining crucial stage experience that builds confidence, sharpens their skills, and involves them in the dance community.

Expanding Horizons

Demonstrating its commitment to serving Harlem’s youth, Uptown Dance Academy recently moved to a new facility in East Harlem. With three large studios, this new location allows UDA to support an expanding student body and offer an even more classes. As of March 2024, UDA is home to 60 students, all benefiting from a tiered tuition system designed to make high-quality dance education accessible to a diverse group.

Looking to the Future

Uptown Dance Academy continues to be a resource for minority youth in Harlem, supporting the next generation of dancers and performers. Under Robin Williams’ leadership, UDA not only provides training but also builds the community through the arts. As we observe National Black Business Month, we celebrate the significant impact of Uptown Dance Academy and anticipate their continued growth and success.
